After years of Genocide, the occupation of the Vietnamese and Civil War, the toll on the Cambodian people was enormous. Most of the people remaining had lost members of their families, leaving countless widows and orphans. In addition, many were left disabled from war and it’s after effects. The people faced many obstacles to normal life such as ill health, lack of education, unemployment and in particular poverty. Moreover, the psychological trauma from years of war, compounded by the enduring suffering of many survivors, began to manifest in dangerous behavior. An increase was seen in drug and alcohol addiction, the spread of communicable and venereal diseases, violence within families, smuggling and/or sexual abuse of children, as well as other criminal activities.
Worried by this horrific crisis, Prof. Long Sedtha established the Build Your Future Today Centre (BFT). Sedtha’s life is an inspiration, demonstrating determination and care for his fellow people. He experienced suffering and hardship during the Khmer Rouge regime in addition to 12 years as a refugee in the Cambodia-Thai border camps. The Build Your Future Today Center (BFT) aims to provide the opportunity for people who have been living through hardships and poverty with effective solutions to improve their lives it has the ultimate aim of successfully establishing well-being, prosperity and peace to the people of Cambodia.

The Picaflor House Community Project is located in the village of Oropesa, a 45-minute bus ride from the centre of Cusco, Peru. The project was established in November 2010 by Globalteer to support the children and families in Oropesa and the surrounding villages. The project works closely with the local school in Oropesa to provide the most required services to the children attending the school.
We run a volunteer programme at the project where you can help to teach English to the children. Having English as a second language is of huge benefit to the children in an area where a lot of jobs rely on the tourism industry. If you have ever considered immersing yourself in another culture and giving something back to those less fortunate, volunteering with us in Peru could be exactly the opportunity you are looking for.
Our aim is to provide a long-term locally managed and staffed location where local families can receive free education, learn new skills, have access to health education and family support. The children come from the poorer families of the villages we support, they may be orphans or living with extended family/neighbours so home life is not always stable.
Many of the children attending the school in Oropesa come from surrounding villages. Some children live at home and walk up to 4 hours per day to attend school. Some children live away from their families to be closer to the school. Many children are required to work for their lodgings away from home.
